Nick and I were in New York visiting my family from Friday- Sunday. I was really looking forward to the trip, since I have so little vacation time this year. While it was great to see everyone, it was REALLY overwhelming with Nicholas. Because the weather was so hot, we kept him inside for the most part. I'm so lucky to have my family who were such a big help, but it really didn't feel like much of a vacation. Nicholas was on his best behavior, he was awake for most of the day Friday and Saturday, but still woke up 2-3 times during the night. We are pretty sure he is teething so we think that is messing up his schedule. He sees the doctor on Friday so we'll find out what exactly is going on.
My Aunt Sandy and Aunt Sharon (my dad's sisters) made the 9+ hour trip from Pennsylvania to meet the little one - it was so awesome to see them there! My grandmother was also there so it was great for her to meet Nicholas, along with a lot of close family and friends. Everyone thought he was adorable (but of course!) and everyone that hadn't met Dexter fell in love with him as well. :)
Here are a few pics from the weekend.
Part of why we think he is teething - hands and anything else are constantly in his mouth - plus he has small white spots on his gums and drools like crazy! He's also been irritable and crankier than usual.
Hands in the mouth!
Looks like the end of the swaddle is near! He still likes/needs to be swaddled, but has been slowly working himself out of it.
Looks like Mommy needs some hair color - I've gone almost a year without color!
Nicholas and his Great Grandmother. :)

Gift to Self
Be kind to yourself, and do something nice for yourself, like I did today. :)
To Crystal: Love, Yourself. :)
To Crystal: Love, Yourself. :)
Friends May Come and Friends May Go...
Honestly, I’m not even sure how to finish that title! Having a baby has been a real eye opener for me with some of my closest relationships.
Nick - First of all – I always knew Nick would be an amazing dad. That doesn’t mean that we didn’t want to kill each other when we brought Nicholas home. There was my quickly failing health followed by a surprise c-section, then having to deal with the pain that came with major surgery. Then add the lack of sleep for weeks and me hating the idea of going back to work, us fighting over the littlest things – it was not easy. No one tells you these things when you’re pregnant, probably because there’s no turning back and some pregnant women are emotional enough as is! When Nick went back to work a week after Nicholas was born, I would get very frustrated because by the time he came home, I was at my wit’s end. I didn’t know how to comfort my newborn, he would cry and cry and I would be so tired/worried/afraid that I couldn’t see straight. The second Nick walked in the door I would hand him over and shower/eat/ do whatever I needed to do. It was exhausting.
When I went back to work, I realized just how tired Nick must have been in those beginning weeks. We would argue because I didn't have to get up for work and he did, but I didn’t get it until I was back at the office.
Aside from all of those things, Nick and I are so much stronger than we were before. I look at him and look at Nicholas and it honestly brings tears to my eyes (almost on a daily basis). I couldn’t have survived without him. I got up at 1 am for Nicholas today so Nick got up at 5, when I asked him he jumped out of bed without question, got dressed, and headed downstairs to care for him. He cleans up messes without me even having to ask. He knows when I need a break and is there to help me with Nicholas or to help me get through it.
Mom/Dad -Growing up, my father was an alcoholic and my Mom raised the 3 of us on her own a lot of the time. I have always loved and appreciated her, but that feeling is so much stronger now that I have my own child. She really is incredible. I think about how hard it must be for a single mom, but how hard was it for my mom who WASN’T single? She had a husband who was too out of it to help her. I have a great relationship with my Dad now, but as many of you know he had his own personal demons to deal with. Between being drafted in the Vietnam War and then struggling with alcoholism, he did not have any easy life. One of the biggest things he struggled with in his PTSD classes was the feeling that he was not a good father to us. Many of my friends growing up didn’t have a father at all – my one close friend didn’t know her father as he was in prison when she was born, another was a child of divorce and her father would rarely see her even though he lived close by. I told my Dad, you may have thought you were not a good father, but you were always THERE, and I never doubted how much you loved me. When I struggled with depression in high school, I had to see a therapist who tried to blame everything on my parents for being alcoholics – I made it perfectly clear to the woman that it was not their fault, that even though they had their issues, I knew they never wanted anything but the best for me and have always loved and supported me 100%. I’m so thankful that I have two parents that love me more than anything, and it is amazing to see the both of them with Nicholas. I’m so glad they stayed together through the years and can now be around for their grandson. It is amazing to watch them with him, he brings them pure joy.
Nick’s Family - I am SO LUCKY to have such wonderful in-laws. Nick’s Mom is a delivery nurse at the hospital where I had Nicholas. I have liked her from the very first time I met her. She and I are basically the same person (but don’t tell Nick that)! We get along really well and I’m so thankful for that. In the beginning I had a few major meltdowns where Nick would take a day and work from home so I could have a break. Nick’s Dad told him that he and Tami (Nick’s Mom) never could have survived without his parents help. His parents have been amazing and usually take Nicholas once a week or so to give us a bit of alone time. I love that they live so close and I know they love being able to see their grandson so often.
When Nick’s brother Dan and his fiancĂ© Kingsley had their first baby Quinton, Nick and I knew virtually nothing about babies. Dan and Kingsley are actually expecting baby number 2 this fall! We recently were in a pinch and needed a sitter for a few hours, and D&K came over without question. I felt badly as we never offered to watch Quinton and he is over a year old now. I said honestly we wouldn’t have had a clue as to what we were doing – but that was still no excuse. I really appreciated how Dan and Kingsley were there for us and now that we’re more comfortable with babies, as Dan and I discussed, there will be sleepovers galore in the near future!
Nick’s sister Alexis was honestly my savior when I was out on maternity leave. I sent her a card recently that made her cry (that was my goal –hahaha!). She would come over at least once a week, even if for only an hour, so I could shower, eat, talk, have a little break – no matter what it was. If I asked if she could stop by, she would be there in minutes. Even when I told her she didn’t have to, she instinctively knew and would show up anyway. For those of you that don’t know, my mom had a baby that died a few weeks after she was born. I would have had an older sister named Rain. Strangely enough, she and Alexis were born on the same day (years apart). So I think of Alexis as the sister I never got to have. I can’t wait until she has her own baby – she is a baby lover to the highest degree and will make the most amazing mother one day.
There were many surprises to me as to how my friends reacted.
First of all, as far as my work goes - I originally wrote a scathing paragraph about this, and then thought better of it. Let's just say people were not nearly as kind as I thought they would be, and it's really made me realize how important my life outside of work is.
A lot of my friends have children. I now see how hard it is in the beginning and of course until you have a child, you would never know this. That’s why I’m surprised that I really didn’t hear from a lot of my friends who have children of their own. Don’t get me wrong, I know everyone is busy, and I’ve never been so busy as I was when Nicholas was first born. But a simple congratulations (again, I’m not asking for much!) would suffice, and I didn’t even receive that from many friends I have known a long time.
In the beginning weeks with Nicholas I felt very alone. My mom suffered from post partum and I was afraid this would happen to me. I am so grateful that it didn’t, but the thought and fear was always there. A dear friend of mine offered to visit if I ever felt alone, and I told her -at the time- “I always feel alone.” Still, I did not hear from her after telling her this. That was very hurtful to me and I really don’t talk to that friend much anymore.
Having a child has been an incredibly amazing and eye opening experience. Some of my relationships have gotten stronger, while others have faded away. I can honestly say that my life has changed for the better. I have realized who the important people are in my life, and I’ve learned to let the little things go.

Dad Update
Hey Everyone,
My dad had his radiology/oncology appointment Thursday. He will go through 8 weeks of radiation, 5 days a week, for about 15 minutes a day. My dad is the toughest dude I know and I have full confidence he will be just fine. He has a few appointments for other things and will then start the radiation, probably within the next few weeks.
We went to a fundraiser last night for a long time friend of Nick's. Dannah's husband Paul has stage 4 throat cancer and has gone through chemo and is now beginning radiation. There was a huge turn out and I'm sure a lot of money was raised. We actually bet on and won a silent auction prize - it was great to give money to a good cause. We got to see a lot of friends we hadn't seen in awhile as well - Nick's parents watched the babe for us and Dan, Kingsley, and Alexis came with us - it was a great adult night out :)
Here's some recent pics of the babe. He's doing really well, babbling a lot, and the other day on the activity mat he turned on his side and was trying to eat one of the pieces that hang down for him to swat. Also, if you prop him up in the boppy he tries to lean forward and hold himself up- it's pretty darn cute. He's been sleeping from around 8:30p-5:30a which is great!

Aaron's brother commented on this picture saying: I thought cloning was illegal!

Laughing his head off while being changed - so much better then when he used to just scream non stop :)

More smiles

Hey GQ! Yes, that is an argyle diaper. My Aunt Cookie's girlfriend Lila got him these limited edition diapers and they are hilarious!

Hanging out on the boppy

Cuter than Cookie Monster :)

Father's Day
Happy 1st Father’s Day to my husband Nick! The first few months have been a whirl wind of events and I couldn't (wouldn't!) have survived without him by my side. He is already the most amazing father and I know it's only going to get better from here.
Nicholas made the most adorable gift for Nick at day care – I have to say I’m kind of bummed we just missed Mother’s Day! I totally cried when I read the poem, and the little feet – ah!
The day was low key, I let Nick sleep a little later than usual and made him breakfast. He already bought his own gift a few months ago, a new golf club – exciting, I know J Nicholas was an angel ALL day. I had a good talk with him in the morning and he must have understood (heehee), because he cried very little and was a sweet, happy baby.
Here are three pics from the day, that pretty much say it all.

Nicholas is 3 Months Old
Nicholas is 3 Months Old!

Likes:
His Bottle - I don't see this changing any time soon!
His wrist rattle - I put it on him (I bought about 4 since he loves them so much) and it makes noise when he shakes his hand - I say "who loves their wrist rattle??" and he giggles and laughs and puts his hands together (or in his mouth)
The mobile my mom bought him - I know this won't last much longer, but he loves to dance and move around watching it. It's a great help so I can spend a few minutes getting ready in the morning (I shower at night now to make things easier).
His activity mat - great in the morning when we need a few minutes to eat/etc.
His swing - I don't see this lasting to much longer, but it's great for now.
Dislikes:
I'm happy to say I really can't think of any right now. He doesn't mind getting his diaper changed anymore (unless he's anxious for a bottle). Bath time is getting better, now he just looks at me really trying to figure it out, and occasionally smiles. He really only cries when he is hungry or tired.
His sleeping has been pretty good. He slept through the night a few times but for the most part wakes up once (around 2-4 am. If he wakes up at 4 or 5 again sometimes I will bring him in bed with us so we can get a few more minutes of sleep. You know the things you say you'll never do when you have a kid? (talk baby talk, bring your kid in the bed with you..how you'll have the kid that will never cause a scene)...I think it's pretty safe to say you will do/experience all of those. And you know what? It's totally fine and it's totally awesome.
He doesn't have a doctor's appt this week, but we had to bring him Monday because he had a "crusty" eye. Thankfully it was just a clogged tear duct and it is already better. But...drum roll...the little guy weighs 14lbs 12 oz! He has doubled his weight. The pediatrician was very surprised and happy. I can't believe how big my little guy is getting!
Work has been a complete nightmare lately. 7/1 is the busiest time of year for us, and I think this is the worst one yet. I'm not stressed, just really really busy and pretty much exhausted when I get home.
We had a great visit with my mom and brother Erik this weekend, Erik couldn't believe how big the babe as and my mom felt like he was already bigger in just a week.
Ok, this mama has GOT to go to bed..it's 9:35...late night for me :)

Updates all around
My dad had an appointment today to decide on treatment for his prostate cancer, but after getting there and spending almost an hour waiting, he was told his appointment has been moved to the 21st of June to discuss with the radiation/oncology department. A few people have asked so I just wanted to let everyone know the latest. More to follow when he actually gets to have his appointment!
Nicholas finished his first week of Day Care with flying colors! The first day was a little tough, he didn’t sleep unless he was held, but I brought a swaddle in for the second day and he did just fine after that. I really like the day care so far, they give a little report at the end of the day, when he ate, slept, diaper changed, and a little general note if it was a good day or bad, etc. The girls there are all very sweet (and young!) but I can tell they really love what they are doing, and that makes me feel good. Funny story – on day 1 Nick’s dad did a drop in visit for us to check on him, on day 2 Alexis asked if she could stop in because she had come back from vacation and hadn’t seen him for awhile. On day 3, Nick pulls in to pick him up and his mom’s car is in the parking lot – she was there for an hour just holding Nicholas. It’s funny but I really hope they don’t think we’re crazy over there :)
Nicholas has been pretty happy lately – I still look at him and marvel to myself “wow, we made him.” He’s getting a little chunky with some rolls now and it’s awesome. He can fit into some 3-6 month clothes, and he won’t be 3 months until June 12th. He also found his hands the other day and now likes to suck on them constantly and drool all over the place. He woke up in his crib last night and I went to check on him – he was happily sucking away on his hands, I hated to reswaddle him but I knew it would be difficult for him to go back to sleep without it.
My brother Erik and Mom are going to be visiting this weekend, I’m really looking forward to it. My Mom obviously can’t get enough of the babe and Erik visited when he was first born, so I know he’s going to be amazed at how much he has grown since then! We plan on seeing Snow White and the Huntsman at some point and probably grabbing some dinner at The Blue Taleh (great restaurant in Lowell!)
Hope everyone is doing well!
